Ch. 3 - Photography

Andres Gursky. 99 Cent, 1999. Chibachrome print, 6' 9 1/2" x 11'. Musee National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris
Nick Nitta. Right Stuff, Low Price. Panoramic picture.

I discovered Andreas Gursky's 99 Cent, 1999 print while reading chapter 3 in the textbook and it reminded me of a photo I took while I was working at Academy Sports + Outdoors. Although these two differ in their medium, they provide similar subjects and visual characteristics. The variety of consumer goods in both pictures provides an array of color and gives the viewer plenty to look at. I read that Gursky's work was digitally altered in order to reduce the depth of the image. From the perspective in 99 Cent, 1999, your view of the aisles is stacked or flattened, as opposed to how the aisles in my panoramic are in line with the viewers eyes and spaced out. Thanks to photographic innovations and the results you get from cibachrome color-printing, 99 Cent, 1999 preserves the colors and amazing detail of the image and allows the audience to search for familiar products in the first couple of rows.
