Art and Religion

Growing up as a Catholic and going to church on Sundays, I can instantly picture seeing Jesus on the Cross, stained glass, and other religious statues or art around and in the church. I believe that art's purpose in the Church has been less appreciated as history progressed into modern times. Hundreds of years ago, art was the only media of the day that supplied people with a visual representation of the figures found in Biblical stories. Paintings, sculptures and other forms of visual art served an important roles in communicating meaning to it's viewers. The art heightens the feeling of spiritual presence in the Church and gives the space character. The more I think about art's place and purpose in the Church, the more I have become aware of it's importance and I am more appreciative of it.
